About Yala National Park

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most famous and second-largest national park, covering an area of 979 square kilometers. Located in the southeastern region of the country, Yala is best known for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world, making it one of the best places on Earth to spot these elusive big cats.

The park is divided into five blocks, with Block 1 being the most visited and offering the best wildlife viewing opportunities. Yala's diverse ecosystem includes grasslands, scrub jungle, rock outcrops, coastal lagoons, and beaches, creating habitats for a wide variety of wildlife.

Beyond leopards, Yala is home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, and over 200 species of birds. The park's coastal areas are also important nesting sites for sea turtles. Yala offers an authentic African-style safari experience in the heart of Asia.

Key Attractions

Leopard Spotting: Yala has the highest leopard density in the world. Early morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best chances of sightings.

Elephant Herds: Large herds of Asian elephants can be seen throughout the park, especially near waterholes.

Bird Watching: Over 200 bird species including endemic birds like the Sri Lankan junglefowl and Sri Lankan grey hornbill.

Coastal Areas: Beautiful beaches within the park where sea turtles come to nest.

Best Time to Visit February to July for best wildlife viewing. Dry season offers better animal sightings.
How to Reach 5-6 hours drive from Colombo. Nearest airport: Bandaranaike International Airport.
Park Hours 6:00 AM - 6:30 PM. Morning safari: 6-10 AM. Evening safari: 3-6:30 PM.
Safari Booking Must book through licensed tour operators. Jeep safaris available. Book in advance during peak season.
