About Kandy

Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, is a beautiful city nestled in the hills of the Central Province. As the last capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka, Kandy is home to the sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Buddhism's most revered sites. The city is built around a scenic lake and surrounded by misty hills, creating a picturesque setting.

Kandy was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, primarily for the Temple of the Tooth and the city's unique architectural heritage. The city maintains its ancient traditions and is the center of traditional arts, music, dance, and crafts. The annual Esala Perahera festival, one of Asia's most spectacular pageants, takes place here with grand processions of dancers, drummers, and beautifully decorated elephants.

Beyond its cultural significance, Kandy offers beautiful botanical gardens, tea plantations, scenic views, and a pleasant climate. The city serves as a gateway to the hill country and is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Sri Lanka.
